Brand New for National Poetry Month...

Artists, Artisans,
and
Orwellian Descent

I saw a word in print last week,
impressive it did sound.
I only guessed its meaning
and began throwing it around.
I turned my back on Mr. Webster,
that stuffy, boring fool.
Words mean what you want them to,
and I thought I sounded cool.
My friends were just as dull as I,
and looked to me to lead.
If I spoke it with authority
They saw no need to read.
Orwell’s Newspeak simplified
our dinner conversation.
To check a fact or cite a source
ruins verbal masturbation.
All was well until this morning,
I passed a painter on his way.
He saw me and he cried out,
“I have some things to say!
“An artist and an artisan
are not one and the same.
The words aren’t interchangeable,
my profession’s not a game.
“As a surgeon’s not a butcher,
as a gelding’s not a mare,
but a dilettante’s a detriment
to Culture everywhere.”
So now I know the difference,
and I’m welcome in more places.
I’ve left the squawking  parrots
in exchange for smarter faces.

One More for National Poetry Month...with apologies to Ogden Nash.

If Art Can Be In Everything....

If Art can be in Everything
why can’t it be in Cash?
If Quid Pro Quo’s no sin, why then
Is work for pay so brash?

When did the dollar and the paintbrush split,
or were they ever friends?
Why is it wrong to want to eat and buy?
But this society offends.

We are like you, we need and want,
as all the people do.
We pay our taxes, bills and fees,
and like our lights on, too.

Another for National Poetry Month...

Doorbell
(Madame Ferrell ne reçoit pas)
Welcome to Guyandotte,
I see you’ve found my door.
I bet you feel so holy,
a’preachin’ to the poor.
I know it is that time again
For your big’ol church revival,
So I’ll make it clear, as I do each year,
My story of survival.
I’ve never talked to your god,
And I doubt you’ve talked with mine,
But I know about the foxes
And how they spoil the vine.
I am sick and tired of folks
In ways you cannot know.
I render unto Caesar
and leaven all my dough.
This is my home, my property,
I don’t owe you a debt.
Quit wearing out my doormat
and working up a sweat.
Daylight’s burnin’, time’s a’wastin’,
We’ve both got things to do.
It’s okay, be on your way,
And please, Shalom to you.
