Artistree in West Virginia

Recently, I mailed in my entry for the inaugural year of "Artistree", to be displayed at the mansion of West Virginia Governor Earl Ray Tomblin and First Lady Joanne Jaeger Tomblin.

"Mountain Madonna" ©Kathy Ferrell, 2011. Acrylic on wood.

Here are some photos of how this piece was created.

This is the preliminary sketch, created with Corel Painter.
Here I've begun laying in the darkest parts of the piece.

Here you can see colors being laid in.

Finally, here is a sculpture that is in process. I intended my sculpture to be the entry, but I quickly realized the clay would not be dry in time. This is my first time using La Doll & Premiere clays, and I'm definitely enjoying them, so I'll be finishing the sculpture, anyway.
